In 2015, we set out with a simple idea: make broadcasting easy for everyone.

Not just for radio veterans or engineers. Not just for corporations or institutions. For everyone. The 19-year-old bedroom DJ. The retired BBC presenter. The music journalist. The hotelier. The everyman with a mic and a mission. The brand with a story.

Ten years on, that mission still holds strong. We've helped thousands of creators, communities, and brands get their voices on air. But this story isn’t just about software; it's about access, opportunity, and a belief that radio should be for everyone.

So how did we get here? Let’s take a look back.

Our Founding Vision

Back in 2015, launching an online station wasn’t just technical; it was borderline impossible unless you were already in the industry or a software engineer on the side. There was no “easy” way in.

Radio.co was built to change that. We wanted creators to skip the awkward years and get straight to the good part: broadcasting. But the platform didn’t appear out of thin air. It was the spiritual successor to Wavestreaming, our founder James Mulvany’s earlier platform, which ran from 2004 to 2015. That foundation gave us a decade of experience and hard-won lessons to build something stronger and more streamlined.

We set out to solve a simple but significant gap in the market: lowering the barrier to entry. No more juggling clunky software or buying studio-level equipment. Just plug in, schedule, broadcast.

2015: Radio.co Comes Online

In 2015, Radio.co came online. And we hit the ground running.

We didn’t have a grand roadmap at first; just the belief that broadcasting should be accessible. That belief paid off faster than we expected. Within six months, the platform had exploded in popularity. Broadcasters were drawn to the simplicity, reliability, and freedom to create on their own terms. What we built resonated with hobbyists and professionals alike, forcing us to scale quickly and think bigger, sooner.

Our Growth and Milestones

Fast forward a decade: Radio.co has grown from a single-product startup into a global broadcasting platform serving over 4,000 customers. We’ve built a team of 43 employees, remained proudly bootstrapped, and stayed profitable the entire way.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a massive turning point. With traditional media disrupted, more people looked for ways to create and share content on their own terms. We saw rapid growth in both users and team size.

Where most saw disruption, we saw an opportunity. Rather than creating separate, disconnected tools, we focused on building an all-in-one platform. It made our offering more powerful and more intuitive; something many others have since emulated.

Changing Industry, Expanding Impact

Online radio has evolved; so have the people using it.

In our early days, it was mostly independent broadcasters and community stations. Now, we’re seeing everyone from global brands to former BBC presenters embracing internet radio to build new kinds of connections.

Some standout success stories:

  • Shaun Keaveny’s Community Garden Radio: After leaving BBC Radio 6 Music, Shaun launched his own station through Radio.co. It’s a perfect example of an established broadcaster going independent and reconnecting with audiences on his own terms.

  • Whiskas Cat Calm Radio: Yes, the pet food brand. They created a soothing radio station to help keep cats calm at home; a unique example of how radio can be used for customer experience, not just content.

  • The Standard Hotel's Sound Studio: This iconic hospitality brand used Radio.co to power their in-house radio experience, showing how hotels can use music and storytelling to elevate the guest experience.

  • Next’s Internal Radio: The British retail giant created a private radio station for their warehouse teams. It’s a creative solution to internal comms; keeping staff informed and connected across locations.

These examples show just how flexible online radio can be. Whether you’re broadcasting to thousands of fans or a few dozen warehouse workers, the goal is the same: real connection through sound.

Staying Lean, Growing Smart

At the heart of Radio.co is a small but mighty team. We’ve grown intentionally: promoting from within, building expertise, and staying nimble.

In 2023, we restructured to support growth, promoting key leaders into Heads of Department roles across marketing, tech, support, and product. That change created clearer ownership, faster decision-making, and a more scalable foundation for the next decade.

Most of our team is UK-based, with remote members in the US. We’re collaborative, curious, and, most importantly, we actually use the platform ourselves. Many of us come from radio backgrounds, with hands-on experience across commercial, community, and digital broadcasting. Our Solutions team alone brings over 30 years of combined industry knowledge to the table. That insider perspective shapes everything we do. It’s broadcasting made by broadcasters: practical, intuitive, and built for the real world.

Our culture mirrors our product: simple, flexible, and people-first.

Looking Ahead: What's Next for Radio.co?

The past decade laid the groundwork. The next one is about scaling smart and evolving with purpose.

Here’s a look at what’s coming:

  • Entering New Markets: We've recently launched in the Spanish-speaking market and plan to expand further.

  • Voice Studio: Our newest feature, designed to make producing high-quality content even simpler, launching soon.

  • Smart AI Integration: We’re integrating AI thoughtfully: not just for the sake of it, but where it genuinely saves time or enhances creativity. From automating routine tasks to generating transcripts and improving content tagging, our AI tools are designed to help broadcasters do more with less. But rest assured: we’ll always put the human voice first. AI is a tool, not a replacement. The soul of radio will always come from real people.

New Look, Same Mission

As you might have noticed, we’ve had a bit of a glow-up. We’re proud to introduce a fresh new look: cleaner visuals, updated design, and a more modern feel across the board.

But while the outside’s been refreshed, what’s inside hasn’t changed. We’re still the same Radio.co: same mission, same values, same commitment to making broadcasting simple and accessible for everyone.

The new brand reflects where we are now: a more mature, confident platform. But one still built on everything that got us here. We’ve evolved with our community, and this refresh is about staying current without losing what makes us who we are.

This isn’t a reset. It’s the next chapter.

The Heart of It All: Giving Creators a Voice

At its core, Radio.co has always been about empowerment: giving people a voice, regardless of their background, budget, or tech skills.

From a handful of users in 2015 to a global community of broadcasters in 2025, we’ve never lost sight of the original mission: give people the tools to tell their story.

Radio.co has helped launch tens of thousands of stations. Some became full-time businesses. Others stayed as passion projects. All of them matter.

So if you’ve been with us since day one, thank you. And if you're just getting started, welcome!

Whether you’re broadcasting from your bedroom, managing an internal station for your brand, or building the next big audio network: we’re here to help you get on air and stay there.

Here’s to the next ten years: more voices, more stories, and a simpler path to broadcasting for everyone.
